Mt. Washington Goes Green!
School, Community Launch
Recycling Initiative
Rumpke Recycling, Cincinnati
Recreation Commission, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful
and Mt. Washington community leaders unveiled a
neighborhood recycling center at 1:30 p.m.,
April 4, during an assembly at Mt. Washington
Elementary School.
The event kicked-off with the delivery of a 6-cubic
yard Rumpke Recycling container, which was purchased
through a grant from Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.
“This is a very exciting
time for the Mt. Washington community,” said Ken
Peck, Mt. Washington recycling coordinator. “Not only
will we develop good recycling habits in our
children, but area residents without curbside service
will finally have a place to drop-off their
recycling.”
The Rumpke Recycling container, which has been
permanently located in the school parking lot,
accepts a variety of items, including aluminum and
metal cans, paper, #1 and #2 plastic bottles, glass
bottles, newspapers and corrugated cardboard. A
complete list of acceptable materials is located
online at www.rumpkerecycling.com.
Friday’s assembly included a lesson from Rumpke
Recycling on the importance of recycling and speeches
from community leaders on how the students can spread
their good recycling habits to the rest of the
community. Rumpke’s mascot, Binny, will make an
appearance.
Mt. Washington School students have been preparing
for the event all week, through various classroom
lessons. The students were also challenged to
create a design for recycling bins for their
classrooms. The student with the winning
design, which was announced on Friday, received a $25
gift card to Target.
The Mt. Washington recycling initiative is a
cooperative effort with participants including Rumpke
Recycling, the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, Mt.
Washington Elementary School, the Mt. Washington
Community Council, the Mt. Washington Community Urban
Redevelopment Corp. and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.
