Category I Misconduct
The discipline policy at Mt. Washington is based on a continuum of counseling
students and contacting the home when students stray from attaining their education
and persist in behaviors that are a distraction from their future.
Students who do not respond to the interventions offered them (counseling,
alternative work settings, time out, etc.) may be issued a demerit. A demerit
is a notification
to both the student and parent that a particular behavior is getting in the
way of the child’s education. The teacher issuing the demerit will
call/contact the child’s parent/guardian, so that the parent and teacher
can help redirect the child’s focus. Demerits may also come in tandem
with a detention, and with older children they usually do. Upon being issued
a demerit, the student will bring home two white copies of this demerit.
One copy should be signed and returned to school. The other is for your home
reference
Demerits 3, 6 and 9 will result in the assignment of a Saturday School. At
demerit #6, 9 and 14, a mandatory conference with the child, parents/guardians,
teacher(s) and principal is required. At this conference all parties involved
will discuss and implement an action plan designed to help the child re-orient
his/her participation and interaction at school. At
demerits 12 and 15 the student may be assigned to an alternative learning center.
Students will be assigned to another classroom within the building to do their
work. At demerit #18, the student will serve an out-of-school suspension or
be assigned to an alternative learning center. At demerit #21, after repeated
interventions and conferences, the student will be referred to a permanent
alternate educational setting. Upon being issued a demerit, the student will
bring home two white copies of this demerit. One copy should be signed and
returned to school. The other is for your home reference.
Tardies and Failure to Return the Monday Messenger
Daily attendance of all students is required by law. The school does
recognize that on occasion events conspire against a family,
and a student arrives late
to school. Therefore, a student is allowed five tardies before a disciplinary
action (demerit) is taken. The school also recognizes that families get busy
and on occasion forget to return the Monday Messenger. However,
when a student (or family) demonstrates a pattern of tardiness, or fails
to return a signed Monday Messenger within two days, a demerit will be issued
to the student. The accompanying detention or Saturday School must be served
by the student
Missed detentions will result in the replacement
of the detention with a Saturday School.
Repeated demerits issued for tardiness will result in a referral to the
district school social worker. The social worker is required by law to
report a pattern
of tardiness and/or absences to the court.
