Discipline Policy

Philosophy of Discipline

The staff at Mt. Washington provides each child with the opportunity for academic success and social maturation. A child’s potential is seen as a precious gift to be nurtured and supported by all the adults in that child’s world. Consequently, the educational environment at our school is based on mutual respect, an acceptance of shared responsibility and a continual communication flow between the school and home. In sharing the responsibility for the education of your child, the school stands ready to support and assist the academic pursuits of your child here at school, and with you at home.

Disciplinary and Academic Interventions

Because the staff believes in the right of every child to be given the opportunity to achieve, the focus in the classroom is on learning and not on disruptive distractions. Students who are frustrated with learning are gently redirected to different and supportive approaches and methods designed for success. Students who cannot stay focused on getting their education, or disrupt the educational climate of others, will be offered choices designed to redirect their efforts. These choices may include:

a different area in which to work within the classroom,
a temporary assignment to a work space in another classroom,
a phone call home to receive support and guidance from a parent/guardian,
time out in the office and counseling from the principal.

If all of these interventions prove ineffective, the student may then find himself/herself faced with disciplinary action

.
Positive Rewards for Good Conduct

The students at Mt. Washington are busy getting their education. Hard work brings its own reward, but it also brings extra recognition and opportunities at school. Students who show kindness and consideration towards others can earn a “Caught Being Good” sticker. Students can also earn stickers by being diligent workers, cooperative helpers, and positive role models. Students may use these stickers to purchase items in the student store during the bi-monthly visits.

Individual teachers may also have additional classroom rewards for good conduct and consistent effort. As the positive incentive program grows at Mt. Washington, we look forward to designing and offering students an array of varied rewards for a job well done.

Character Pledge
Your child’s education is our number one priority. The staff and students have adopted the following pledge as a way of expressing a deep commitment to the development of potential:

Mustang Character Pledge

I pledge to be a Champion for Character
I will be worthy of Trust.

I will be Respectful and Responsible,
doing what I must.

I will always act with Fairness.
I will show that I Care.

I will always be a good Citizen,
and always do my share.
