1,000 Hands Build a

Super Community

Playground!

Home

It all started as an idea for promoting community spirit. Ken Peck, President of the Mt. Washington Civic Association, was the man with the idea. Consultants, Leathers & Associates, businesses, the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, Mt. Washington School, United Way & Community Chest, and about 1500 volunteers came together in May 1998 to build a playground for the entire Mt. Washington Community. Many, many individuals and groups participated and contributed.

It took months of planning and organizing. Students made suggestions about what they wanted in their playground and raised more than $1000 in pennies for the project. Community and School staff members purchased pieces of lumber. Skilled workers from miles around came to contribute to the building. Many, many people pitched in and worked a "shift".

The result is unique and fun gathering place for the young and young at heart in Mt. Washington located beside the school on land owned by the Cincinnati Recreation Commission.

The photos that follow try to show how it all came together.

Supplies arrive, and workers begin the basic work.
Volunteers go to work.
